The Chinese government has started the construction of a large hydroelectric power station named "Medog" in the canyon section of the Yarlung-Tsangpo River located in the Tibet region. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This was reported by the Foreign Policy publication. The construction process is being carried out with a high level of secrecy, says ecologist Wen Xiabang.
According to him, the project could pose a serious threat to the unique plant and animal species in the region. South Asia expert Niraj Singh Manhas considers this move geopolitically risky.
According to him, by controlling the source of the Brahmaputra River, China could gain an advantage in water policy over India and Bangladesh. Experts emphasize that the "Medog" dam is highly likely to negatively affect the water balance and climate system in the region.
The construction is being carried out without a full study of ecological and social impacts, which could exacerbate environmental problems in the area. Some international observers believe that this project is one of China's major initiatives in the energy sector and could create a new balance in relations with neighboring countries.
However, ecologists stress that if the damage to nature is not taken into account, such projects will negatively affect regional stability. Thus, the construction of the "Medog" hydroelectric power station is an issue of great importance not only ecologically but also politically.
