A historic meeting took place in Moscow between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the interim leader of Syria, Ahmad al-Shara. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This was the first dialogue between the two state leaders and lasted approximately two and a half hours. The meeting discussed the long-standing cooperation between the two countries, Syria's new political and economic development prospects, and Russia's role in this process.
During the negotiations, Syrian leader Ahmad al-Shara highly appreciated Russia's assistance in shaping new political and economic systems. He emphasized Moscow's status as a permanent strategic partner for Damascus and expressed expectations for the strengthening of bilateral relations in the future.
Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov refused to answer journalists' question, "Did Putin and al-Shara discuss Bashar Assad's fate?" He stated that no official statement regarding Assad's future will be made at this time.
It is worth recalling that in December of last year, Russia granted asylum to former Syrian President Bashar Assad and his family. According to Germany's Zeit publication, Assad currently lives in Moscow with his family and spends much of his time playing video games.
According to analysts, this meeting signals the formation of a new political system in Syria and an increase in Russia's influence in the region. Although the Kremlin remains silent on the Assad issue, Russia continues to strengthen its position as a key player in the region.
Thus, the meeting between Putin and Ahmad al-Shara is regarded as an important turning point in Syria's new political direction. Meanwhile, Bashar Assad remains out of the political spotlight but continues to be a focus of attention.
