The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has released the final report on the 2023 tragedy involving OceanGate company's submersible "Titan." This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the report, the disaster that occurred during the expedition to the famous "Titanic" wreck was caused by an engineering error. It was found that there were several serious flaws in the construction process of the "Titan" submersible.
The engineering solutions did not meet international strength standards, and the company did not conduct sufficient testing nor fully verified the actual stability of the equipment. This reduced the safety level of the submersible.
Experts believe that OceanGate company did not fully comply with internal safety protocols. The U.S. Coast Guard had previously noted a significant discrepancy between the company's declared safety system and the actual measures in place.
The "Titan" submersible was approximately 6.5 meters long and set off on June 18, 2023, to dive into the Atlantic Ocean to view the "Titanic" wreck. A few hours later, the vessel cracked and sank to the ocean floor, resulting in the deaths of five people on board.
Among the deceased were British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, and French underwater researcher Paul-Henri Nargeolet. Experts emphasize that the "Titan" tragedy should serve as an important lesson for safety standards in the private research sector.
This incident clearly demonstrated that human intellect, striving for new technological heights, can sometimes forget its limits. The tragedy once again reminded the necessity of always paying attention to safety measures.
