Although Australia is often considered the smallest continent in the world, its area is very large and amounts to approximately 7.7 million square kilometers. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This figure is close to the total area of Europe. The continent of Europe occupies 10.2 million square kilometers, but one-third of it belongs to Russia.
Excluding Russia, the actual area of Europe is about 6.6 million square kilometers. The area of the European Union is 4.2 million square kilometers, which is much smaller than Australia.
However, the situation is different in terms of total population. More than 450 million people live in the European Union, and across the whole of Europe, this number reaches 744 million.
The population of Australia is only 27 million. Since large areas in Australia are dry and have little water, most of the population is concentrated mainly along the coasts.
According to data from 2024, one-third of Australia's population lives only in Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney has 5.23 million residents, and Melbourne has 4.95 million.
The central regions of the country remain almost uninhabited. Thus, although Australia is not smaller than Europe in terms of area, its population distribution and economic activity have a completely different character.
Despite having vast territories, the main centers of life on this continent are limited to the ocean coasts.
