US President Donald Trump announced that high tariffs on products imported from India will remain in place until India stops purchasing oil from Russia. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
He expressed this opinion to journalists while returning to the White House. According to Trump, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told him that India would stop buying Russian oil.
Following Trump's statement, Indian officials emphasized that there had been no phone conversation on this matter. Nevertheless, Trump noted that tariffs would not be lifted if India continues trading oil with Russia.
According to him, these tariffs were imposed because India purchased oil from Russia. The US government states that revenues from Russian oil are financing the war in Ukraine.
After Western countries imposed sanctions on Russian oil, India became its largest buyer. For this reason, the US is urging India to stop the trade.
Trade negotiations between India and the US are currently ongoing. According to representatives of the Indian government, the talks are taking place in a friendly atmosphere, but they have not disclosed details.
Trump is using tariff policy as a means of pressure on India. According to data, India's oil imports from Russia increased by 20 percent this month.
Experts believe that despite Trump's threats, this growth may not decrease in the coming months.
