The Bulgarian government has expressed its position on the possibility of holding a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Budapest. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the country's Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, Sofia is ready to support any initiative that serves peace negotiations. In an interview with Bulgarian National Radio, he emphasized that organizing any meeting necessary to achieve peace is the right approach.
In response to a journalist's question, the minister said that if the participants do not attend the meeting, it would be meaningless. At the same time, he stressed support for any action that serves peace negotiations.
It should be recalled that on October 16, Donald Trump held a two-hour phone conversation with the Russian president. After the conversation, Trump announced his intention to hold a face-to-face meeting in Budapest.
On the other hand, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, described the possibility of this meeting as an "unpleasant signal." In her opinion, it is an awkward situation for a person wanted by the International Criminal Court to come to European territory.
At the same time, Kallas acknowledged that if the meeting helps peace negotiations, it has political significance. Bulgaria's statement has gained significant attention in the European political arena.
Some analysts describe Sofia's stance as a pragmatic and diplomatic approach. According to them, Bulgaria aims not to worsen relations with Moscow while also avoiding conflict with the European Union's policies.
So far, the exact date of the Budapest summit between Putin and Trump is unknown, but according to diplomatic sources, the meeting may take place in the coming weeks.
