French President Emmanuel Macron received former head of state Nicolas Sarkozy at the Elysee Palace. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The meeting took place on October 17 and lasted about an hour. So far, official Paris has not commented on the meeting, and the content of the conversation remains confidential.
According to sources from the Figaro publication, Macron and Sarkozy did not discuss the court ruling. However, after the first instance verdict, the procedure for Sarkozy to serve his sentence, in particular the issue of transferring him to a disciplinary colony, was discussed.
As President Macron emphasized, current heads of state have immunity under the law, but such rights do not apply to former presidents. It is recalled that on September 25, the court found Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of illegal financing of his election campaign and sentenced him to five years in prison.
On October 21, he will be placed in the “La Sante” prison in Paris. The 70-year-old former president will serve his sentence in a single cell in a special VIP section.
This decision was made taking into account his age and status as a former head of state. Nicolas Sarkozy was President of France from 2007 to 2012.
The investigation against him began in 2013, and during the trial, it was established that his presidential campaign was illegally financed by the Libyan government. Sarkozy denied his guilt and called the verdict an insult to France.
His defenders plan to file an appeal. Experts believe that the meeting between Macron and Sarkozy could have a significant impact on political processes in France.
This situation concerns not only legal but also political stability issues.
