European country leaders have supported US President Donald Trump's new proposal to stop the war in Ukraine. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to them, the fighting should stop immediately and the current front line should serve as the basis for an agreement. A joint statement supporting this proposal was signed by 11 country leaders led by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Donald Trump emphasized that the fighting should cease and both sides should remain in their current positions. He said that this way, thousands of lives could be saved.
However, this idea is causing debate and controversy among Western countries. Russia firmly rejected the proposal.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that such a peace would be temporary. Moscow only wants long-term and stable peace.
Additionally, Russia demands a complete withdrawal from Donetsk and Luhansk regions in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is approaching Trump's idea cautiously.
He stated that handing over Donetsk and Luhansk territories would not stop the war; on the contrary, it would create opportunities for further attacks by Russia. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine's position has not changed and it will continue to defend its territories.
A meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to take place in Budapest. However, the date of the meeting has not yet been determined.
The Kremlin has not provided information about this meeting, but the Russian side has stated that it has not abandoned its conditions.
