Mosquitoes have been detected in Iceland for the first time. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to local scientists, this was reported by The Guardian. Three mosquitoes were found in the southwestern region of the country, belonging to the species Culiseta annulata.
These mosquitoes are cold-resistant and it is emphasized that they can survive by hiding in basements and storage rooms during the winter season. Until now, Iceland was known as the only area outside Antarctica where mosquitoes do not permanently live.
Scientists assess the emergence of these insects as a result of global climate change. According to climatologists, Iceland is one of the regions warming faster compared to other areas of the Northern Hemisphere.
This situation may affect the local ecology and living conditions. Additionally, experts warn that the appearance of mosquitoes may increase the risk of spreading new diseases.
The changes occurring in Iceland require further research in the fields of climate and environment.
