The French painter Yves Klein's unique painting titled “California,” composed entirely of blue, was sold for 18.4 million euros at Christie's auction in Paris. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This information was announced by BFMTV. The painting measures approximately four by two meters and is considered one of the largest monochrome works by the artist held in private collections.
The “California” piece was created in early 1961, before Yves Klein's first and only trip to the United States and his exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles. The artist named and patented the special ultramarine shade he developed as “International Klein Blue.”
According to him, each monochrome work expresses a unique atmosphere and meaning, and this color symbolized infinity for the artist. As Christie's representatives emphasized, the fine gravel sprinkled on the painting's surface resembles the seabed or ocean depths.
Although Yves Klein passed away in 1962 at the age of 34, his philosophy of blue-based art continues to attract great interest today.
