In New Zealand, a 13-year-old teenager required major surgery after swallowing magnets purchased online. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to The Guardian, doctors performed surgery to remove approximately 100 strong neodymium magnets from the boy's intestines after he swallowed them. The teenager, who suffered severe abdominal pain for four days, was admitted to Tauranga Hospital.
X-ray examination revealed that the magnets had pierced the intestinal wall and caused tissue necrosis in several areas. Doctors emphasized that the magnets the boy swallowed were very powerful, attracting each other inside the intestines and damaging the organ walls.
During the operation, surgeons removed dead tissues from several parts of the small and large intestines. The procedure lasted more than five hours to save the boy's life.
Interestingly, the sale of such magnets has been banned in New Zealand since 2013. However, the teenager purchased them from an online marketplace called Temu.
The company announced that an internal investigation has been initiated regarding this incident. According to the company's statement, the investigation process is currently ongoing.
It has not been officially confirmed that the magnets were purchased specifically through Temu, but the list of all hazardous products is being reviewed. Experts warn that such cases can later lead to serious complications such as intestinal obstruction, ulcers, and chronic pain.
For this reason, parents are advised to pay special attention to the online purchases of young children and teenagers.
