The UK government will begin temporarily housing undocumented migrants in military barracks starting from the end of November. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to The Times, initially the army base near Inverness in Scotland and the military training camp in East Sussex in southern England will be put into use. It is planned that up to 900 undocumented migrants will temporarily reside in these locations.
According to sources from the Home Office, this number could increase to up to 10,000 in the future. The government's main goal is to reduce the budget burden and eliminate the need to accommodate illegal migrants in expensive hotels.
According to data, as of March 2025, more than 32,000 undocumented migrants are living in 210 hotels across the UK. This results in significant expenses for the state budget.
In a report published on October 27 by the UK Parliament's Home Affairs Committee, it was emphasized that the cost of housing illegal migrants in hotels over the decade from 2019 to 2029 will amount to £15.3 billion, approximately $20.4 billion. This new measure is being introduced to save the budget and effectively manage the migrant issue.
