The recent elections in New York City have sparked significant discussions not only in the US but also in international political circles. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
In this election, 34-year-old Muslim Democrat politician Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor. His victory has caused various reactions among the city's Jewish community and Israeli officials.
Amihai Shikli, Israel's Minister of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, commented on the event, calling on Jews to return to Israel. He described the situation in New York as "the city's shift from freedom to fanaticism."
"New York will no longer be the same, especially for Jews," said Shikli. He also emphasized the increasing security issues in major cities like New York and London.
Israel's Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, also expressed negative views about Mamdani. He described Mamdani as a HAMAS supporter and an open enemy of Israel.
Among the 1.3 million Jewish residents living in New York, the election results have reportedly caused great concern. Mamdani promoted issues such as social justice, economic equality, and raising taxes on the wealthy in his campaign platform.
He aimed to implement plans such as freezing rent, making preschool education free, and providing free public transportation. In the election, he secured 50.4% of the vote, surpassing former governor Andrew Cuomo.
Former US President Donald Trump also commented on the matter, calling Mamdani a "left-wing communist" and warning that his policies could lead New York into an economic crisis. Currently, the political situation in New York has become quite tense.
While Mamdani's victory is seen by some groups as a major win for minorities, on the other hand, the event is regarded as a clash of religious and political views. His political activity is being closely monitored not only by the US but also by the international community.
