The US government has introduced a new initiative in international politics. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Washington has presented a draft resolution to the UN Security Council proposing the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria's interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa and the country's interior minister Anas Hasan Khattab. This was reported by the Reuters news agency.
According to White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, on November 10, Ahmad al-Sharaa will visit the US and hold a meeting with President Donald Trump. During this meeting, both parties are expected to discuss expanding the international coalition against ISIS and Syria's official accession to this coalition.
Reuters writes that even if the vote on the resolution is not held before the Trump and al-Sharaa meeting, it will not halt this visit. This is because the UN sanctions committee has previously granted travel permits to Syria's interim leaders.
Additionally, in September, it was reported that Syria's Foreign Minister Hasan al-Shibani visited the US. Washington has been calling on members of the UN Security Council in recent months to ease pressure on the Syrian government.
The date for the resolution vote is currently unknown. Its adoption requires the support of at least nine countries and no veto from any of the permanent members.
The Trump administration aims through this decision to improve relations with Syria and strengthen its influence in the Middle East. In May, Trump announced a new policy towards Syria and a gradual lifting of economic sanctions imposed on the country.
At the same time, Ahmad al-Sharaa recently traveled to Moscow and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the meeting, al-Sharaa emphasized that the new Syrian government will adhere to all previous agreements with Russia.
Putin stated that Moscow is ready to restore relations with Syria. According to reports, Ahmad al-Sharaa overthrew Bashar Assad's government and took temporary power at the end of 2024.
Previously, he led the "Nusra Front" movement. Although Russia has long supported Assad's government, it has begun cooperating with the new government as well.
It is said that Bashar Assad and his family have been granted political asylum in Russia. Experts believe that if the resolution is adopted, it will help restore Syria's economy and mark a new era in US-Damascus relations.
This process is regarded by international political observers as an important step aimed at strengthening the Trump administration's influence in the Middle East.
