The cholera epidemic is spreading widely across the African continent, reports the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Since the beginning of 2025, this infection has been recorded in 23 countries on the continent. According to official data, more than 297,000 people have contracted the disease, of whom nearly 7,000 have died.
This indicates a mortality rate of 2.3 percent. The most severe situation is observed in Angola and Burundi.
Experts emphasize that poor sanitation conditions and lack of clean drinking water in these countries are causing the epidemic to spread. At the same time, although cases have slightly decreased in South Sudan, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, these countries still remain among the high-risk areas.
Experts warn that due to heavy rains, the epidemic may intensify again by the end of the year. Cholera is an intestinal infection caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria, primarily transmitted through contaminated water or food.
Globally, more than 518,000 cases have been identified in 32 countries, with over 6,500 patients having died. Doctors advise the public to strictly follow hygiene rules, use only clean drinking water, and be cautious with suspicious food products.
Health systems are reminded of the necessity to strengthen rapid measures against the epidemic.
