Life imprisonment for war crime in Ukraine
A Russian serviceman Dmitry Kurashov was sentenced to life imprisonment in Ukraine for shooting and killing a Ukrainian prisoner of war. This was reported by Zamin.uz.

The verdict was announced on November 6 at the Zavodskoy District Court of Zaporizhzhia region. The court panel assessed Kurashov's actions as a gross violation of international humanitarian law and the rules of war.

Prosecutor Nikita Manevskiy requested a life sentence for the defendant. During the trial, he emphasized that Dmitry Kurashov showed no remorse and was indifferent to his actions.

The defendant refused to speak in court, but his lawyer Anna Karpenko stated in his defense that Kurashov believed he was following orders and was in a state of shock. However, the court did not take the lawyer's claims into account.

According to the investigation, the incident occurred on January 6, 2024, in the Pologovsky district of Zaporizhzhia region. Kurashov shot and killed an unarmed and surrendered Ukrainian soldier Vitaliy G.

Witnesses testified that Vitaliy was shot while standing with his hands raised and kneeling. Other Russian prisoners of war also confirmed Kurashov's crime during the trial.

According to the court's conclusion, Kurashov was found guilty of violating international war rules and deliberately killing a prisoner. This is considered one of the harshest sentences handed down by Ukrainian courts to a Russian serviceman.

The verdict has not yet come into force, and the defendant has the right to appeal. Ukrainian law enforcement agencies emphasized that this case is an important signal for the international community.

Any war crime, even if committed on the front line, must not go unpunished.
