It has been found that the use of the Ukrainian language in schools in Kyiv has significantly decreased. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the “Strana” publication, 66 percent of students studying in the capital's schools do not know the state language during lessons. Additionally, 82 percent of students do not use Ukrainian during breaks.
The research results show that only 18 percent of students speak exclusively Ukrainian during lessons. Among teachers, 24 percent continue to use Russian during lessons, and 40 percent use it during breaks.
This situation indicates changes occurring in the social environment and language balance. Experts explain this situation by the complexity of language policy in the capital during the war years.
Although the Ukrainian government is taking measures to widely implement the state language, Russian still holds a leading position among many families and schools. At the same time, according to Svitlana Babines, head of the State Service for Education Quality of Ukraine, 40 percent of school students communicate in Russian outside of class time.
The proportion of students who consider Ukrainian their native language has decreased from 71 percent to 64 percent. This situation highlights the need to seriously reconsider the role of the state language in the education system.
