New political controversies have arisen around former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the Yonhap news agency, the prosecution has brought serious charges against him, including abuse of power and providing assistance to North Korea. It is emphasized that these charges are related to Yoon Suk-yeol’s order last October to launch drones.
Investigators believe that this action may have been carried out to provoke a military response from North Korea and to create grounds for imposing martial law within the country. In particular, it has been reported that one of the drones was shot down near Pyongyang.
The prosecution initially planned to consider this case under the article of “incitement to foreign aggression.” However, to apply this article, it must be proven that Yoon Suk-yeol had direct communication with North Korea.
Therefore, he was charged under the article of “providing assistance to a general enemy.” Within the scope of this case, investigations have also begun against former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and the head of the counterintelligence service, Yo In-hyung.
This article is applied in cases where South Korea’s military interests have been harmed and does not require proof of the accused’s connections with a foreign state. Last year, North Korea accused Seoul of sending drones across the border.
South Korea denied these accusations, describing the drone flights as a “secret military operation.” It is worth recalling that Yoon Suk-yeol was appointed president in 2022.
However, in December 2024, the National Assembly removed him from office for declaring a short-term martial law. Later, the impeachment was confirmed, and although Yoon Suk-yeol made several attempts to be released, these efforts ended unsuccessfully.
Currently, investigations against the former president are ongoing. The South Korean public regards these events as a test of responsibility and transparency for the country’s political system.
