Central Asian countries – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan – have reached new agreements to strengthen cooperation in the water and energy sectors. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The negotiations were held on November 22 in Almaty, led by Kazakhstan's Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenzhenov. Considering the complex situation at the Toktogul reservoir, the parties agreed to support each other during the winter season.
Specifically, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan confirmed the supply of electricity to Kyrgyzstan during the winter season. This will help Kyrgyzstan reduce water consumption in electricity production and preserve water in the Toktogul reservoir.
In the spring and summer seasons, the accumulated water will be delivered to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, enabling stable irrigation necessary for agriculture. Additionally, the three countries agreed to cooperate on energy saving and reducing excessive consumption.
Experts emphasized that such cooperation will contribute to enhancing the region's energy security. At the end of the meeting, the parties signed a document approving the volume of electricity to be supplied during the winter season and the water reserves management plan for 2026.
Earlier, Uzbekistan joined the Protocol on Water and Health, intensifying its efforts to combat the consequences of climate change.
