US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced to European countries that Washington will provide security guarantees to Ukraine only after a peace agreement is concluded. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This firm position was announced by Politico magazine and caused serious concern in European countries. According to sources, this US demand was also reflected in the written proposals sent to Kyiv last week.
According to reports, US President Donald Trump indicated that he might not receive the Ukrainian leadership at the White House until a peace agreement is signed. Ukraine, on the other hand, considers the security guarantees provided by the West as an important condition for concluding a peace agreement with Russia.
For this reason, the US position of "Agreement first, then guarantees" is creating a complicated situation for Kyiv. According to Politico, the political positions of the Trump administration appear complex and contradictory.
Marco Rubio emphasized in a meeting with European representatives that the US is ready to provide security guarantees, but this will only be implemented after the specified conditions are met. Additionally, the US demands that issues such as territorial integrity and frozen assets be resolved as a comprehensive package.
European countries are concerned about this approach. Some diplomats criticize the Trump administration's policy for not paying sufficient attention to international law and human rights.
According to them, this could lead to the emergence of a new but weak model in the European security system. European countries fear changes that align with Russia's interests.
