The issue of wearing hijabs in Austrian schools has once again come to the forefront. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
A new bill is being drafted to ban girls under the age of 14 from wearing hijabs in schools in the country. According to Reuters and European Pravda news agencies, the ruling coalition plans to submit this document for parliamentary discussion in the coming days.
If the law is passed, it is expected to affect approximately 12,000 students. Supporters of this initiative emphasize that the measure is aimed at protecting the freedom of girls.
Yannik Shetti, leader of the liberal Neos party, states that a religiously neutral environment should be created in schools. At the same time, the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) considers this ban only a first step and proposes to expand it further in the future.
However, this decision has caused serious objections. The Austrian Islamic Religious Community has assessed the ban as contrary to constitutional rights and religious freedom.
They recall that a similar ban introduced in 2020 for girls up to 10 years old was annulled by the Constitutional Court and was regarded as discrimination against Muslims.
