
There has been a great loss in the world of science in the USA. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Nuno Lurero, head of the Plasma Physics and Thermonuclear Research Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a prominent nuclear physicist, died tragically. According to law enforcement agencies, on December 15, the scientist was found with a gunshot wound at his home in the Brooklyn area of New York.
Although he was immediately taken to the hospital, doctors were unable to save his life. The scientist died the following day as a result of the injuries sustained.
Currently, the police have opened a criminal case regarding this incident and continue to search for the suspect. The cause and motives of the attack are not yet clear.
It is worth noting that two days before this incident, a shooting occurred at Brown University. Two people were killed and nine others injured.
Representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have stated that no connection has yet been established between these two incidents. Nuno Lurero’s home is located 80 kilometers from Brown University.
Nuno Lurero was born in Portugal and moved to the USA in 2005. Since 2016, he worked at MIT, initially as deputy director of the Plasma Physics Center and later as the head of the center.
The scientist gained international recognition for his research in plasma physics and thermonuclear fusion. This tragedy has once again brought the issue of scientists’ safety in the USA to the forefront.
