The issue of prisons in Syria has once again become a pressing topic. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
After the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, changes in the country's prison system were expected. The new president, Ahmed ash-Sharaa, promised at the end of last year to close the famous prisons from the Assad era.
However, a year later, it has become known that many old prisons and detention centers are operating again. According to international organizations, hundreds of people are being held in these places without official charges.
Among those detained are former military personnel, individuals belonging to various religious communities, and citizens arrested on security-related suspicions. In some regions, an increase in arrests has been observed.
Former prisoners and their family members emphasize that the conditions in the prisons are harsh. According to them, the spaces are cramped, and food and medical assistance are insufficient.
Additionally, there are reports of violence, beatings, and demands for money directed at prisoners. It is also said that some families have been asked for money to release their relatives.
The Syrian government states that these detentions are carried out to ensure the country's security and to investigate crimes from the Assad era. However, human rights organizations are calling on the new leadership to comply with laws and to stop illegal detentions and violence.
Experts believe that this issue remains a serious test on the path to restoring stability and trust in Syria.
