As a result of the incident, 57 cars were involved in a chain collision. Several vehicles caught fire due to the accident, and rescue operations lasted for several hours.
According to information, the event took place on the Kanetsu Expressway in Gunma Prefecture on Friday around 7:30 PM. Preliminary conclusions indicate that a collision between two trucks caused the chain accident.
As a result of this incident, 57 vehicles stopped at various points along the road. More than 10 cars caught fire due to the severe collisions.
Firefighters needed 7.5 hours to extinguish the fire. Rescuers worked under conditions of high temperatures and explosion risk.
According to police information, two people died as a result of the incident. They were found in the burned vehicles.
It has been confirmed that one of the deceased was a 77-year-old woman. Additionally, 26 people were injured, five of whom were hospitalized in serious condition.
Investigators cite adverse weather conditions as the main cause of the tragedy. Snowfall and slippery roads created a dangerous situation for drivers.
Currently, the Kanetsu Expressway remains closed in both directions between the Yuzawa and Sukiyono interchanges. Tow trucks have begun removing damaged vehicles, but it is reported that more time is needed to fully secure the road.
