Israel recognized Somaliland independence

On December 26, 2023, Israel officially recognized Somaliland's independence. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Since 1991, Somaliland has been operating as a de facto independent state, not recognizing the central government in Mogadishu. Israel's decision has sparked widespread discussions in the international community.
Experts are analyzing the impact of this step on regional politics, Somaliland's position on the international stage, and the reactions of other countries. Lyudmila Samarskaya, a researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Center for Near East Studies, assessed Israel's move as part of a strategy to expand the "Abraham Accords."
According to her, Somaliland's geographic location is of significant importance to Tel Aviv. Since this area is near the Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Aden, and the activities of the Houthis in Yemen, it attracts Israel's interest from the perspectives of logistics, intelligence, and security.
However, opening a military base abroad is not a common practice for Israel. Nevertheless, the presence of a military base belonging to the United Arab Emirates in Somaliland draws attention.
Additionally, Israel's decision is being analyzed in the context of regional rivalry with Turkey. Turkey is attempting to increase its influence in the region by opening a military base in southern Somalia.
The Somali government sharply criticized Israel's decision, calling Somaliland an integral part of the country. Internationally, this decision has also caused various protests.
The African Union and the United Nations have deemed the recognition of Somaliland's independence contrary to international legal norms. Some countries, notably Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, have expressed concerns that this decision could set a dangerous precedent and potentially support separatism.
However, in Somaliland, this decision is considered symbolically significant. According to Michael Walls, a professor at University College London, this recognition is seen as the result of years of efforts by Somaliland.
Nevertheless, the practical outcomes of this decision are not yet very noticeable. Domestically, this event has temporarily united various political forces.
At the regional level, this decision could be beneficial for Ethiopia. Ethiopia conducts a large part of its foreign trade through Djibouti and seeks access to the Berbera port in Somaliland.
Negotiations between Ethiopia and Somaliland on this matter have taken place before. However, Ethiopia postponed the issue due to international pressures.
Israel's decision may serve as a stimulus to reconsider these relations. The United Arab Emirates may also use this situation to advance its own interests.
The Emirates are striving to strengthen their ties with Somaliland and expand cooperation within the framework of the "Abraham Accords." Therefore, Israel's decision is expected to have a significant impact on the regional geopolitical balance.
