Former First Lady in South Korea Sentenced to 20 Months

The former First Lady of South Korea, Kim Gong Xi, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison on corruption charges. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This sentence has not yet come into legal force, and the defense has the right to appeal. According to court documents, Kim Gong Xi illegally received valuable gifts, including diamond jewelry and luxury items, from representatives of the "Unification Church."
It was established that these gifts were received in exchange for certain political favors. The court also ruled to confiscate the illegally obtained items.
However, due to insufficient evidence of stock manipulation and political financing violations, Kim Gong Xi was acquitted of these charges. Kim was arrested in August 2025.
During the trial, the diamond jewelry received from the "Unification Church" was presented as the main evidence. Due to her status as First Lady, Kim managed to avoid responsibility for a long time.
This incident not only recalls issues related to Kim Gong Xi but also those connected to her husband, former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon Suk Yeol was tried in 2024 for matters related to the state of emergency and was sentenced to five years in prison in 2026.
His trials on other charges are still ongoing. These events have caused significant repercussions in South Korea's political scene.
The main question now is: will the sentence change during the appeal process, and how will this situation affect the country's political life? It has once again been proven in Seoul that holding office does not fully protect a person from accountability.
