Contract for the management of Panama ports has been terminated

The Supreme Court of Panama has canceled the contract granting CK Hutchison the right to manage the Balboa and Cristobal ports located on both sides of the Panama Canal. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the court, this agreement was contrary to the requirements of the country's constitution. This decision has attracted significant international attention and sparked geopolitical debates.
The ports in the Panama Canal hold strategic importance not only for the local economy but also for global trade and influence. In particular, this decision is seen as part of the economic and political rivalry between the United States and China.
During his presidency, Donald Trump considered China's infrastructure projects in the Panama Canal as a threat to U.S. security. The cancellation of this contract is viewed as a diplomatic victory for the United States.
According to investigation results showing that the contract harmed state interests, Panama's budget has lost approximately $1.3 billion since the 1990s. The government now plans to engage a temporary operator to manage the ports and hold a new tender.
For China, this decision is regarded as a diplomatic setback in the region. Especially, this event is expected to impact China's strategy in Latin America.
Beijing intends to form a new working group to explore ways to protect its interests in this matter. Panama's economy is fully dollarized, which increases U.S. influence in the country's economy.
Thus, this decision is not only related to port management but also represents an important step in defining transit, logistics, and geopolitical spheres of influence.
