He was charged with attempting to impose a short-term state of military emergency in December 2024, leading a rebellion, and abusing his powers. According to international news agencies, including Reuters and AP, prosecutors sought the death penalty for Yun Sok Yol, but the court sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The court ruling described the incident as a serious threat to the country's constitutional order. It stated that the former president attempted to pressure the parliament, restrict political opponents, and disable state institutions.
The charges noted that Yun Sok Yol tried to deploy troops and police around the parliament to prevent the annulment of a parliamentary decision and attempted to arrest certain politicians. This 2024 event was annulled by the parliament within a few hours and was followed by impeachment proceedings.
