The hydrogen-fueled aircraft project initiated by Airbus in 2020 is unlikely to be fully realized by 2035, reports Wylsa.com.
Within the scope of the project, it was planned to produce three commercial aircraft powered by hydrogen within 15 years. For this, Airbus invested 1.7 billion euros. However, the development of the zero-carbon engine ended unsuccessfully. Additionally, technological issues related to the production, transportation, and safe storage of hydrogen slowed down the project's progress.
In February 2024, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury stated that it was impossible to create a commercial model that could compete with conventional aircraft in this project. In March, he compared this project to the Concorde, which was fast but economically unsuccessful.
Currently, the project remains within Airbus, but the budget and the number of engineers have been significantly reduced.
Airbus' hydrogen aircraft will not be ready by 2035
