Toni Shnayder appointed permanent CEO of Bluesky social network

Recently, Bluesky, considered a major competitor to the X platform, underwent a significant leadership change, as reported by Zamin.uz.
Since March of this year, Toni Shnayder had been serving as interim head of the company and has now officially assumed the role of permanent CEO. This appointment comes at a time when the platform is reevaluating its development strategy.
International tech publications have reported on the development. Toni Shnayder is regarded as a specialist with extensive experience in the technology sector.
He is known as the founder of Automattic, the company behind major projects such as WordPress and Tumblr. Additionally, he is a partner at True Ventures, a venture capital firm that is one of Bluesky’s investors.
According to Shnayder himself, after four months of interim work, he felt fully aligned with the platform’s goals and decided to remain in his position. It should be noted that Jay Graber, Bluesky’s long-time leader, stepped down from his role in March, transitioning to the position of Director of Innovation.
During Graber’s tenure, the platform’s user base grew to 43 million, and decentralized network technology saw significant expansion. Now, Shnayder aims to build on this foundation to create new opportunities.
Under the new strategy, Toni Shnayder has indicated that future plans will be announced, with primary focus placed on creating smaller spaces and closed communities. He believes this approach will drive the next phase of innovation and user growth.
This reflects a shift toward a safer, interest-based environment, as opposed to the open and public feed. Bluesky’s history is directly tied to Twitter.
Originally launched as a small project within Twitter, the platform later became an independent entity. Notably, after Elon Musk took control of Twitter and renamed it X, Bluesky became a primary network for users dissatisfied with the changes.
However, recent data suggests the platform is facing some challenges in user retention. While activity spiked following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, growth has since slowed somewhat.
Some experts have expressed varied opinions about the platform’s future, but the appointment of a new leader could mark a turning point for Bluesky. Shnayder’s main task ahead is to shape Bluesky not merely as a copy of other networks, but as an independent brand with its own distinct values.
He concluded his remarks by saying that we are still at the very beginning of this story.
