Factors that can partially or completely damage eyesight
Eyes are one of the most precious gifts given to us. Recognizing the world, distinguishing colors, watching the faces of our loved ones — all of these urge us to pay more attention to the health of our eyes. Below, we will discuss habits that can lead to a decline in vision sensitivity and their solutions.

Diet

Consuming carrots and leafy green vegetables alone is not enough for eye health. The relationship between eye light and nutrition is quite complex. If you consume constant sweets, processed products, coffee, and fast food, you may face eye-related problems in the near future. This is because a deficiency of vitamins A, C, E, zinc, and omega-3 weakens the retina and makes it sensitive to light. Excess salt and sugar are also harmful: they disrupt blood circulation and can lead to glaucoma.

Solution: Add spinach, broccoli, sea fish, nuts, and eggs to your diet. Consume less sugar and drink more water. And yes, carrots are good, but with olive oil - without fat, vitamin A simply cannot be absorbed.

Chronic Stress

“All diseases stem from the nerves,” say the wise. Indeed, there is truth in their words, and this rule also applies to the eyes. Long-term stress consumes the body's resources, resulting in tighter muscles. The eye muscles struggle to focus, and the retina suffers from poor blood circulation.

But that's not all. Constant stress increases the internal pressure in the eyes, which over time can lead to glaucoma.

Solution: Learn to relax. Find an activity that relieves stress for you, such as walking, reading, yoga, or talking with loved ones.

Insomnia

Insomnia is harmful not only to the brain but also to the eyes. Lack of proper rest can lead to dry eye syndrome, redness, and even temporary vision loss.

The eyes constantly produce tears, which serve to keep the surface of the eye moist. Lack of sleep disrupts this natural function of the eyes. As a result, the tear glands do not produce enough fluid, or the tears evaporate before they can moisten the eye surface. In some, both of these issues are observed. In this case, the eyes may feel dry and irritated.

Additionally, sleep is responsible for the normal functioning of blood vessels. Disruption of sleep quality impairs the blood supply to the retina, leading to a decline in vision.

Solution: Normalize your sleep time and schedule, aim to sleep at least 7-8 hours a day, avoid using gadgets an hour before bed, and ensure silence and darkness in the room.

The Threat of Black Screens

Computers, smartphones, and televisions have become constant companions in our lives. However, when staring at a screen for a long time, the eyes blink less, leading to dry eye syndrome.

Prolonged screen time strains the eyes. The eyes become dry, leading to fatigue, pain, or discomfort. Additionally, smartphone screens emit blue light, which can damage the retina over time and interfere with the production of the hormone melatonin, disrupting sleep.

Solution: Reduce screen brightness, use a blue light filter, or wear protective glasses.

Hormones

Pregnancy, menopause, and thyroid-related issues can temporarily or permanently reduce vision. This is because hormones affect metabolism and the condition of blood vessels, including those in the eyes. Diabetes (also hormone-related) increases the risk of retinopathy — damage to the retina.

Solution: Do not ignore changes in your body. If vision worsens due to hormonal disorders, consult a doctor.

Side Effects of Medications

Antihistamines, steroids, antidepressants, and antihypertensive medications all have side effects such as dry eyes and temporary vision loss.

Solution: Before taking any medication, familiarize yourself with the usage guidelines and discuss potential risks with your doctor in advance.

Ecology and Polluted Air

In large cities, the air is often dry, with many harmful and toxic gases and smoke. All of this affects eye health.

Solution: Even on cloudy days, wear sunglasses that protect against ultraviolet rays. Use humidifiers at home.

Neglecting Contact Lens Hygiene

Contact lenses are a great invention that helps millions of people see better. However, if used improperly or not cared for, they can have adverse effects.

Solution: Follow the proper care guidelines for lenses.
