The Duma proposed to use the "Oreshnik" missile against Ukraine

The chairman of the Defense Committee of the State Duma of Russia, Andrey Kartapolov, proposed to strike with a new powerful missile called 'Oreshnik' in response to the mass drone attacks carried out by Ukraine on Moscow and other regions in recent days.

According to Kartapolov, whether this decision will be implemented or not will be determined by Vladimir Putin, as he is the supreme commander of Russia.

“Using the 'Oreshnik' missile would be the right decision, not just one, but several,” says Kartapolov.

Ukrainian drone attacks and Russia's response

In recent days, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that mass attacks by Ukrainian drones had been carried out on Moscow, the Moscow region, and other areas, resulting in casualties and destruction.

For this reason, Kartapolov's proposal has been met with controversy by military experts.

Some analysts believe that the likelihood of using a ballistic missile is low, but this action could be interpreted by the US as Russia's unwillingness to engage in peace negotiations.

What is known about the 'Oreshnik' missile?

This missile was first used against the city of Dnipro on November 21, 2024. It is a hypersonic weapon capable of reaching speeds of up to 10 Mach. The 'Oreshnik' is a medium-range weapon, and its use could provoke a strong reaction from the US and the West.

Kremlin and Putin's reaction

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has received full information about the drone attacks on Moscow.

“Kyiv is targeting residential buildings, while Russia is attacking military facilities,” says Peskov.

So far, no official decision has been made by the Kremlin regarding the 'Oreshnik' missile. Such a large-scale attack could further escalate tensions between Russia and the West.
