Kremlin and Trump's meeting: negotiations and possible scenarios

The Moscow Times reports that the Kremlin is exploring the possibility of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump in April or May. The publication stated that extensive discussions on this matter are being held, relying on current and former Russian officials.
Possible date of the meeting
According to current discussions, the most favorable scenario is to hold the meeting during the Easter holiday period. This date falls on April 20, 2025. However, Moscow is reportedly inclined to postpone this meeting as much as possible. This may indicate Russia's intention to seek as many concessions from the US as possible in exchange for halting military operations.
At the same time, the Kremlin does not want to delay the meeting for too long. Russian officials are concerned that interest in negotiations may wane, considering the growing anti-Moscow sentiment in the US and Europe. Therefore, the meeting is planned to take place "no later than June."
Main issues in the negotiations
Russia plans to discuss several important bilateral issues during the meeting, in addition to the matter of ending the war in Ukraine. These include:
- Cancellation of Western sanctions;
- Investment in Russian strategic projects by the US;
- Agreements on strategic stability and arms control.
Russian sources emphasize that both sides are striving to achieve concrete victories from the negotiations. This requires extensive preparatory work. Any agreement must be well-documented and thoroughly developed.
Trump's attitude towards the meeting
Donald Trump has expressed his desire to meet with Putin several times. He has indicated that if re-elected as US president, he intends to improve relations with Russia. On the other hand, Moscow is maintaining caution in its official rhetoric and has not yet issued any official statements on this matter.
US and Europe’s position
On March 11, the US proposed a 30-day unconditional ceasefire to Russia and Ukraine. During this period, negotiations for a peace agreement are expected to take place. Kyiv has expressed its agreement to this proposal, but Moscow has not yet commented on it.
In the coming weeks, new details regarding the negotiations and possible meeting may emerge. The communication between the Kremlin and Trump is expected to have a significant impact on the international political situation.
