The advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Akbar Velayati, expressed his opinion about the corridor planned to be established in the Caucasus with the initiative of the United States. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
He emphasized that Tehran will never agree to such a project and will maintain its firm position on this matter. Velayati spoke about this in an interview with the Tasnim news agency, from which the Interfax source quoted.
According to Velayati, this corridor could turn into a field serving the hired soldiers of former US President Donald Trump, but in reality, it does not belong to the American leader. The Iranian politician also recalled that Tehran had previously opposed the idea of creating the Zangezur corridor.
In his opinion, such a corridor could create new conflicts in the geopolitical environment of the region, harm regional stability by crossing borders, and lead to the disintegration of Armenia. For reference, on August 8, former US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached on the use of the transport corridor, which was the main obstacle to the peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku.
It was also announced that the corridor would be named "Trump's International Path to Peace and Prosperity." According to Trump, this agreement is enshrined in the declaration, and naming the corridor in this way is a great honor for him, although he did not ask for it.
The American leader emphasized that this special transit area allows Azerbaijan to pass through Nakhchivan with respect for Armenian sovereignty. At the same time, Armenia is also planning to engage in exclusive cooperation with the United States for the purpose of developing the corridor.
Currently, there are serious debates about whether this project could intensify geopolitical disputes in the region or, conversely, serve peace and economic development.
