Serious human rights issues in North Korea have once again drawn the attention of the international community. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the latest report presented by the United Nations, citizens who have watched or distributed South Korean TV series in the country are facing severe punishments. In some cases, it has been reported that they were sentenced to death by the court.
James Kinnin, head of the UN human rights mission, stated that since 2014, control over the population in North Korea has been intensified. A surveillance system has been implemented using new technologies, and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, punishments have become even harsher.
The report notes an increase in executions not only for political charges but also for ordinary offenses. This situation is causing great concern in the international community.
At the same time, it was also noted that incidents of violence in prisons have slightly decreased and some minor reforms are being carried out in the judicial system. However, UN experts express concern about the widespread continuation of child labor in North Korea.
According to the information, teenagers are being forced into labor in coal mines, construction work, and special “strike brigades.” International human rights defenders consider this situation one of the most serious violations.
Experts are calling on the North Korean government to abolish the death penalty, stop forced labor, and respect human dignity.
