The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, described this decision as a "serious blow to the world economy." In her speech at the "European Union - Central Asia" summit in Samarkand, she stated:
“President Trump's imposition of tariffs on the whole world, including the European Union, has been a serious blow to the world economy. Uncertainty is increasing, and protectionism will be further fueled. The consequences will be devastating for millions of people around the world. This will be felt immediately. Millions of citizens will face rising costs for food. Medicines and transportation will become more expensive. Inflation will rise.”
The European Union emphasized that it will take countermeasures if the US does not come to the negotiating table regarding these tariffs.
Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris stated that the European Union must maintain calm and restraint in its response and emphasized the need to seek solutions through negotiations. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Trump's tariff decision "incorrect" and promised to use all means to prevent a trade war.
