In 2024, the new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump caused a significant uproar on the international stage. According to his decision, a 10 percent customs duty will be imposed on goods imported from all countries. For some countries, this figure is significantly higher: for example, 34 percent for China, 20 percent for the European Union, 24 percent for Japan, and 26 percent for India.
European Union's Reaction
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, described this decision as a "serious blow to the world economy." In her speech at the "European Union - Central Asia" summit in Samarkand, she stated:
“President Trump's imposition of tariffs on the whole world, including the European Union, has been a serious blow to the world economy. Uncertainty is increasing, and protectionism will be further fueled. The consequences will be devastating for millions of people around the world. This will be felt immediately. Millions of citizens will face rising costs for food. Medicines and transportation will become more expensive. Inflation will rise.”
The European Union emphasized that it will take countermeasures if the US does not come to the negotiating table regarding these tariffs.
Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris stated that the European Union must maintain calm and restraint in its response and emphasized the need to seek solutions through negotiations. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Trump's tariff decision "incorrect" and promised to use all means to prevent a trade war.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson:
“We do not want an increase in trade barriers. We do not want a trade war. This makes our nations poorer and poses a long-term danger to the world.”
France and Germany's Reaction
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he would meet with business circles at the Élysée Palace to discuss this issue. This indicates France's intention to reassess its relations with the US.
Asian Countries' Reaction
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce sharply condemned Trump's decision in a statement and announced that it would take countermeasures to protect its rights and interests:
“There are no winners in trade and tariff wars, and protectionism is not a solution. The US must correct its wrong actions and resolve trade disputes with all countries, including China, through consultations based on equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit.”
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated:
“The current measures and other extensive trade restrictions imposed by the US government will have a significant impact on the economic relations between Japan and the US, as well as on the world economy and the multilateral trading system.”
South Korean Acting President Han Duck-soo also expressed deep concern about the new tariffs, emphasizing that the government must use all its capabilities to overcome this trade crisis.
Australia and Canada's Reaction
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese opposed such US policies, stating:
“Friends do not do this. Tariffs make no sense and contradict the foundations of partnership between the two countries.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that they would not sit idly by and would fight against these tariffs:
“We will protect our workers and build the strongest economy in the G7.”
Russia and Other Countries
Trump's decree did not mention Russia, as Russia is already under US sanctions. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre commented on this:
“The sanctions imposed against Russia have already significantly excluded the possibility of trade.”
In 2024, the trade volume between Russia and the US amounted to 3.5 billion dollars, the lowest figure since 1992. Cuba, Belarus, and North Korea have also not been affected by these tariffs, as the existing US sanctions against these countries are very strict.
Trump's new tariffs have resonated widely in the international community. Many countries perceive this as a threat to the economy and intend to take countermeasures. Countries such as the European Union, China, Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Australia are striving to negotiate with the US. At the same time, global economic relations and trade order are undergoing a serious test.
