The first phase of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian HAMAS movement in the Egyptian city of Sharm ash-Shaykh has been successfully completed. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to Reuters agency, the meeting held last night took place in a positive atmosphere. During this gathering, HAMAS expressed its position on several important issues.
Among other things, the mechanism for releasing hostages, the scope and schedule for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip were discussed. HAMAS, recognized as a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States, expressed its concerns regarding a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces.
According to reports from DPA and AFP agencies, the parties will continue negotiations on October 7. The talks are based on a 20-point plan proposed by the Trump administration on September 29, aimed at ending the war in Gaza.
This plan envisions HAMAS releasing Israeli hostages, while Israel gradually withdraws from Palestinian territories. It also includes the condition for Israel to release 250 Palestinian prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment.
At a meeting held in Washington at the end of September, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved this approach. HAMAS representatives are also reported to have given principled agreement to some points in early October.
In summary, despite the presence of complex issues in the first round, the negotiations proceeded in a spirit of dialogue. Now, the most important and complex issues — a permanent ceasefire, the timetable for troop withdrawal, and a clear roadmap for the exchange of hostages — will remain the main topics of discussion in the next phases.
