Due to a sharp increase in bear attacks in northern regions of Japan, the government is taking emergency measures. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the Associated Press, since April of this year, bears have attacked dozens of people, resulting in 12 fatalities. Official data indicates that since the beginning of the year, more than 8,000 bears have approached residential areas.
This figure is six times higher compared to last year. The most severe situation is observed in Akita Prefecture.
Residents of the region have become afraid to leave their homes in the evening, and forest paths seem deserted. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has decided to mobilize the army to control the situation.
The military personnel are unarmed, using only shields, nets, and special sprays. Their main task is to trap bears, capture them, and assist hunters.
Experts believe that the increase in bear attacks is caused by climate change and food shortages. While the decrease in rural population brings animals closer, the reduction in the number of hunters complicates the problem further.
