The capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, has ranked first in the list of the world's most densely populated cities, surpassing Tokyo. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the United Nations (UN), 42 million people live in the Jakarta metropolis. The second place in the ranking was taken by Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, with a population of 37 million.
Tokyo ranks third with a population of 33 million. It is worth noting that in the 2018 report, Tokyo was in first place.
According to statistical data, about 20 percent of the world's population lived in cities in 1950, whereas now this figure has reached 50 percent. Forecasts suggest that by 2050, two-thirds of the world's population growth will occur in cities.
Among the ten most populous cities are Jakarta, Dhaka, Tokyo, New Delhi, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Cairo, Manila, Kolkata, and Seoul. Nine of these are located on the Asian continent.
Li Junxia, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN for Economic and Social Affairs, said: “Urbanization is a significant feature of our time. If this process is properly managed, new opportunities may arise in issues such as climate change, economic development, and social justice.”
