According to Dr. Deborah Lee of the British National Health Service, sleeping on the side, also known as the fetal or "cigar" position, is considered one of the most beneficial positions for healthy sleep. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This position reduces pressure on the spine, improves blood circulation, and alleviates symptoms of acid reflux. Experts believe that sleeping with the body and head turned to one side decreases the load on the joints, maintains proper spinal alignment, and prevents pain that may occur during sleep.
According to the Mayo Clinic, this position reduces pressure on internal organs and helps improve blood circulation. Sleeping in the fetal position, with knees slightly drawn to the chest, reduces snoring.
This is especially comfortable for pregnant women and those prone to back pain. However, if the body is bent excessively, breathing may become difficult or a feeling of stiffness in the joints may occur.
One of the least recommended positions is sleeping on the stomach, also known as the "soldier" position. This position can increase the risk of breathing disturbances (apnea) and worsen acid reflux.
If the pillow is too low in this position, the situation worsens. Doctors recommend placing a small pillow under the knees if one must sleep on the stomach.
This relieves pressure on the lower back. If there is discomfort in the shoulders, placing the arms alongside the body in a "starfish" position can provide comfort.
