Mayya Sandu is ready to support the Moldova-Romania union

Moldova's President Maia Sandu has announced that if a referendum is held, she is ready to vote for the country's unification with Romania. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Romania is a member of NATO and the European Union, and Sandu views this path as an important guarantee for Moldova's protection against external pressures. She expressed these views in an interview with the British podcast "The Rest Is Politics."
According to the president, in the current geopolitical situation, it is becoming increasingly difficult for small countries like Moldova to preserve democracy and independence. Sandu has previously emphasized attempts by Russia to interfere in Moldova's internal politics and reiterated these concerns.
At the same time, the real situation in Moldova is also noteworthy. According to Reuters agency data, among Moldova's 2.4 million population, approximately 1.5 million hold Romanian citizenship.
However, according to poll results, about one-third of the country's population supports the idea of unification. Maia Sandu acknowledged that there is not a majority in the public fully backing such an initiative.
For this reason, in her opinion, Moldova's accession to the European Union is a more realistic goal. The Moldovan government plans to join the EU by 2030, but the country faces many reforms and political challenges on this path.
In conclusion, the president's words highlight how urgent Moldova's security and strategic choices for the future are. In politics, sometimes a small statement can lead to significant regional changes.
