Iran is purchasing weapons worth 500 million euros from Russia

Reports have emerged about the strengthening of military-technical cooperation between Iran and Russia. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to a Financial Times source, Tehran has signed a contract worth 500 million euros to purchase 500 "Verba" portable air defense systems and 2,500 9M336 missiles from Russia. The agreement was formalized in Moscow in December 2025, with deliveries planned between 2027 and 2029.
Sources indicate that Iran is taking this step to enhance its air defense capabilities. Specifically, measures are being taken against threats arising from drones and low-altitude strikes.
The "Verba" system can be effectively used against low-flying aerial targets and unmanned aerial vehicles. Negotiations regarding strategic cooperation between Russia and Iran have been ongoing for some time, but recently military-technical ties have notably accelerated.
On January 17, 2025, the two countries signed an agreement on a "comprehensive strategic partnership," although this document did not include an obligation for mutual automatic defense. This suggests that the cooperation is largely conducted within the framework of arms trade and economic interests.
On the other hand, the US military presence in the region is also increasing. In February, Russian and Iranian naval forces conducted joint exercises in the Gulf of Oman, while reports emerged that the US plans to deploy additional aviation forces in the region.
In conclusion, Iran is attempting to strengthen its air defense, while Russia is trying to enhance its economic and geopolitical position through this process. At the same time, the US is demonstrating power to maintain its influence in the region.
This situation could further complicate the political landscape in the region.
