Several high-ranking officials in Washington have speculated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may need to resign in order to achieve a peace agreement. According to AFP on March 2, Sunday, these statements indicate that there have been remarkable changes in the approach of the US administration under President Donald Trump regarding Russia's war in Ukraine.
Thus, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz commented on the situation in an interview with CNN. "We need a leader who can work with us, ultimately engage with the Russians, and end this war," Waltz said.
"If it becomes clear that President Zelensky's personal or political goals are contrary to the desire to end the fighting in this country, I think we will have a real problem," he said.
House Speaker: Zelensky needs to get himself together
At the same time, US House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence on March 2 that for Ukraine to continue on the path to a peace agreement, Zelensky "needs to get himself together and return to the negotiating table with gratitude or someone else needs to lead the country." "President Trump is trying to bring both sides to peace," Johnson said in an interview on NBC News' Meet the Press program.
"What President Zelensky did at the White House was effectively a signal to us that he is not yet ready for this (agreement), and I think that is a great disappointment," Mike Johnson added.
