At first glance, the series “Magnificent Century” appears to be a love story depicted against the backdrop of the history of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Sultan Suleiman. However, the series also addresses several issues related to modern reality, including social deprivation and the lack of women's place in society, as noted by Daryo publication.

Social Deprivation

This concept refers to the limitation or absence of an individual's ability to have a full connection with society. As a result of social deprivation, a person may face psychological, emotional, or economic difficulties.

All the girls in the sultan's harem were forcibly separated from their homeland, families, and friends at a very young age. Khurram, Nurbanu, Kosem, and thousands of other selected women experienced severe psychological trauma knowing they would never return home.

The Role of Women in a Patriarchal Society

Despite some privileges granted to women in the Ottoman Empire, they were valued less than men. In such a society, the main danger for women was the lack of personal freedom. Men made decisions on behalf of women and never entrusted them with the choice. Initially, parents decided their daughter's fate, and later this right passed to husbands.

Women during the Ottoman period could not even dream of living independently. They were condemned to be passive and always submissive. The fate of women who resisted this was often tragic. To survive in this society, women learned not to swim against the current.

It was difficult for women to elevate their status in such a society. Even if state governance fell into the hands of a woman, the value of girls in the country remained unchanged.

The jealousy and hatred among the women in the harem is a clear example of how it can lead to great calamity. While Khurram was trying to be a worthy wife and Muslim mother for the sultan, her mother-in-law Valide Sultan used all her power to eliminate Khurram. Instead of finding common ground with her daughter-in-law, the older woman preferred to fight with her. Valide Sultan, who was previously known for her dignity and wisdom, refusing to sit at the same table with Khurram resembled the whims of a teenage girl.
