New legal restrictions are planned to be introduced for online cinemas and major social networks in Russia. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The State Duma's committee on information policy supported the obligation to block films that undermine the country's traditional moral and ethical values on online platforms. This was reported by the Pravilamag publication.
According to the new regulations, websites with more than 100,000 daily users, including online cinemas, will be required to remove films deemed to undermine values or deprived of distribution certificates by the Ministry of Culture from their platforms within one day. If the requirement is not met, the Russian communications and information oversight body Roskomnadzor may intervene and take appropriate measures against the platforms.
Additionally, social networks with more than 500,000 users will also be held accountable under this law. If users post prohibited content, the platforms will be required to delete this content.
If the new law is adopted, the Ministry of Culture will have the right to revoke distribution certificates or make changes at any time. These changes may take the form of tightening age restrictions for films, for example.
According to the draft law, films that obtain the right to be released in Russia must respect traditional values. Works that contradict these principles will be denied permission.
The draft law was approved in the first reading in the State Duma on June 24, and the date for the second reading has not yet been determined. Once the document comes into force, it will be effective from March 1, 2026.
The author of the amendments is Anton Gorelkin, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma's committee on information policy.
