Seven European Union countries — Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria — are recently discussing a new initiative called the "drone wall" together with the European Commission and Ukraine. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Thomas Rene, a representative of the European Commission, announced that an online meeting on this matter will be held on September 26. In recent months, threats related to Russia have sharply increased in some European Union countries.
Attacks and airspace intrusions have already occurred in the territories of Romania and Poland. For this reason, European countries consider it necessary to take additional measures to strengthen security.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, recently spoke at the European Parliament, emphasizing that the European Union will continue to provide military and strategic assistance to Ukraine. According to her, Ukraine must achieve superiority on the battlefield and in the industrial sector.
To this end, the "drone alliance" initiative will be launched, with an expected allocation of 6 billion euros. Von der Leyen stated that the European Union must respond to the calls of the Baltic states to strengthen its eastern borders.
At the informal summit of European Union leaders to be held in Copenhagen on October 1, the issue of financing the "drone wall" will be reviewed again. The escalation of tensions was caused on September 19 by the violation of Estonian airspace by three Russian military aircraft.
These aircraft were intercepted by Italy's F-35 fighter jets. This incident demonstrated the need to further strengthen the European Union's security policy.
Additionally, this month Poland also reported that Russian drones violated its borders. Lithuania recalled that in the summer, the European Commission rejected a joint project worth 12 million euros for the cities of Tallinn and Vilnius.
However, Russia's recent actions have further increased the importance of this initiative. New consultations between the European Union and Ukraine will be an important step not only in security but also in strategic cooperation.
Through these initiatives, great attention is being paid to ensuring regional stability and security.
