Guinea-Bissau is currently engulfed in a serious political crisis. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Shortly after the country's president, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, announced his victory in the presidential elections, he was detained at the presidential palace. He described this event as a "coup d'état."
According to the publication Jeune Afrique, the detention was not limited to the president alone. The Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff, General Biague Na Ntan, his deputy Mamadu Ture, and the Minister of Internal Affairs Boche Kande were also arrested.
These events indicate serious pressure on the country's political and security system. On November 23, presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Guinea-Bissau.
Twelve candidates competed for the head of state position, including the incumbent president Embalo. However, the political environment intensified after opposition leader Domingos Simões Pereira was not allowed to participate as a candidate.
The election commission was expected to announce the results on November 28. However, Embalo complicated the political process by prematurely declaring his victory.
After Embalo made this statement, AFP and Reuters news agencies reported hearing gunfire around the presidential palace and the national election commission building. The situation in the country remains uncertain for now.
Political rivalry, the actions of the armed forces, and the response of the international community are expected to determine the future development of the crisis in Guinea-Bissau. The local population and international organizations continue to monitor the events with concern.
