Turkmenistan has accepted the CIS chairmanship

Starting from January 1, 2026, the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has passed from Tajikistan to Turkmenistan. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
From now on, throughout the year, the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, will coordinate activities within the CIS and define the main directions of cooperation among the participating states. This was reported by mass media.
Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedov expressed his intention during the chairmanship to fully realize the potential of the CIS, develop multilateral cooperation, and give it new momentum. In 2026, Turkmenistan will pay special attention to developing political dialogue, expanding economic cooperation, strengthening humanitarian ties, and ensuring regional security and stability.
Implementing agreed initiatives within the CIS, including programs to combat terrorism, strengthening border security, and stabilizing energy supply, will be among the priority areas of cooperation. A summit of CIS heads of state is planned to be held during the year, which is expected to take place in the National Tourism Zone Avaza.
Additionally, Turkmenistan will continue to expand cooperation with countries outside the Commonwealth within the framework of the "CIS Plus" platform. This chairmanship creates new opportunities for Ashgabat to strengthen its diplomatic status in the regional arena.
As a neutral state, Turkmenistan can further strengthen its role as a mediator and a factor of stability in the post-Soviet space. Overall, Turkmenistan's chairmanship of the CIS not only increases the responsibility for developing the Commonwealth but also plays an important role in shaping the regional agenda.
