Tokayev rejected claims about parliamentary reforms

Parliamentary reform is ongoing in Kazakhstan. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
During this process, some experts suggested that by strengthening the powers of the parliamentary speaker, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is being prepared to take that position in the future. However, the president denied such claims.
In an interview with the “Turkistan” newspaper on January 5, 2026, Tokayev called these ideas unfounded and emphasized that such assumptions contradict his political principles. According to him, Kazakhstan will remain a state based on presidential governance.
Tokayev stated that even before assuming the presidency, he advocated the principle of “Strong president – influential parliament – accountable government.” He specifically noted that changing the state system for personal gain would be irresponsible.
Furthermore, the president stressed that all important reforms, including changes related to the parliament, will only be adopted through a nationwide referendum. He also noted that there is no basis for searching for a “hidden plan” behind the parliamentary reforms.
According to official sources, 2026 will be a new stage of modernization for Kazakhstan. This year has been declared the “Year of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence.”
Additionally, constitutional reforms are also expected to be of significant importance.
