Former president and former head of the Spartak team, Andrey Chervichenko, commented on FIFA's idea to increase the number of national teams participating in the World Cup to 64 starting from 2030. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
According to him, in such a format some matches may seem insignificant, but it allows countries that are not among the leading football nations to attract attention to the competition. Chervichenko emphasized that FIFA is primarily pursuing commercial interests and striving to increase revenue from the tournament.
He also said that the exciting part of the competition increases as it approaches the final stages, when strong teams remain. Chervichenko called FIFA a commercial organization and stressed that their main goal is to make money.
According to him, spectators are not obliged to watch all the matches. Earlier, the press reported that in the 64-team format, national teams would be divided into 16 groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the next stage.
This new system is expected to serve to increase the global popularity of football.
